Week # 18 Aug 28 Written By Winslow Farm This week is the second to last CSA pick-up and the share includes: leek, shallot, turnip, sweet peppers, bell pepper, European pears, and greens mix (tat-soi, arugula, and mizuna). Leeks are really a beautiful vegetable both in and out of the field. Expressive and delicious, these versatile leeks can be used like onions and scallions – the greens are great too! Check out this awesome recipe for Root Vegetable and Mushroom Pie – substitute the veggies for any root veggies you may have on hand (I used squash, carrots, turnips, & leeks instead of onions, chicken of the woods instead of porcini, but I’ve also used shiitake in the past and have had great results). We all enjoyed this mid-harvest day. Hope you give it a try! Fall harvest time can be a really fun family experience. We took the time to harvest pears and apples this weekend to share with you all. Pears in the share are European and will need to sit on the counter for about a week until they turn yellowish then they will be ready to eat! Apples are available for sale in the farmstand. We made yummy mini apple pies for a friend’s birthday party this week (pictured above with maple whipped cream). Next weekend will be the last share of the season. We hope that you all have enjoyed the bounty of the harvest as much as we have. It is always with a bit of sadness that we say so long to summer, but also with a bit of joy as we ease into the cooler temps. We enjoy the last of the flowers. We hope you do, too. Winslow Farm
